For the one-day mini-festival GJENLYD the contemporary music scene in Bergen will be celebrating local hero Morten Eide Pedersen, new music pioneer Pierre Boulez and compositional contortionist Ruben Sverre Gjertsen – whose music is famously impossible to play.

Among other, you can experience Trond Lossius’ installation where he uses material that the composer, teacher and driving force in Bergen contemporary music scene, Morten Eide Pedersen, left behind.

Doors open at 13.30
Concert starts at 14.00

Avgarde, BEK, Borealis – a festival for experimental music, Currentes, The Grieg Academy and nyMusikk Bergen will all be joining BIT20 Ensemble to bring you a colourful day of concerts played on instruments old, new and completely invented by composers whose music is luscious, illegible, unpredictable, engaging, seductive, surprising, confounding, right here and right now!

As Boulez was one of the musical trailblazers of the 1940s and 50s, so Pedersen was a guiding force in Bergen’s musical life. Steering generations of young composers through their studies, he was a vibrant contribution to culture in the city, until his untimely death in 2014. We’re thrilled to be presenting three world premieres, by two of Pedersen’s students; Rebecka Ahvennhiemi and Ruben Sverre Gjertsen. The latter has been conducted by Boulez himself.

Trond Lossius’ installation in memory of Morten Eide Pedersen, curated by Borealis, will run for one day only, Bergen-based Finnish composer Rebecka Ahvennhiemi’s writing a new piece for the Ensemble Avgarde and there’ll even be a premiere by our very own BIT20 Club. To sustain your excitement we’ll have food and beverages provided by TASC Food and Mohammed Hindi – and tastings courtesy of the discerning musicians’ tea importer of choice – Tedragen.

Come and spend the day with us!
