The artists have been part of the workshop “Returning to Actuality” held at BEK in December and February. Together we have investigated, read, shared, discussed and produced. The focus has been to facilitate the artists’ ongoing art production and give them tools, a sharing environment and assistance in furthering their work.
The workshop in two parts has explored the notions of ‘landscape’ as a diagram of structural power relations, the theory ‘Fukeiron’, and the politics of landscape representation. Can a critical reading of the physical surroundings enable us to see a visual ‘diagram’ of social and economic relations at work?
“Landscape is a way in which economic and political relations of domination and subjection manifest and become visible to the observing eyes.”
– Returning to actuality: fukeiron and the landscape film, by Yuriko Furuhata, 2007
As a starting point we delved into ‘Fukeiron’ which is a theory of landscape that film-makers in Japan took up in the end of 1960 ́s as a critique of modes of documentary and representation practices, and a lacking ability to address structural power relations. From there we have moved on to critical cartography and discussions around how non-anthropocentric world views change the way we look upon our surroundings.

The workshop has been lead by Åse Løvgren, artist and project developer at BEK.
