BEK invites friends, collaborators and new faces for a season opening in our spaces in C. Sundts gate 55, on Friday 23 August at 19:00. Come and join us, when we launch our autumn programme, and enjoy one of the last summer evenings together.

During the evening, there will be presentations by our current studio residents Tze Yeung Ho, Rui Liu and Eleni Ieremia, as well as a launch of our autumn programme with workshops and showcases.

Tze Yeung Ho, currently working in BEK’s sound studio with the project “lipsync serenades for softer occasions”, will share glimpses of his work process, with a particular focus on the interdisciplinary nature of opera.

Rui Liu is working in the electronics lab on the conceptual multi-media art series “Once and Once Again” which explores the theme of repetition. Liu will present a work-in-progress on the project, which delves into the philosophical and aesthetic implications of the act of repeating.

For a new film, “We Would Be Millionaires If We Could Sell Dust”, Eleni Ieremia has been following nail technicians Maya and Dessi at their workplaces in Bergen and Athens. By focusing on the small, often unnoticed details in these salons and the invisible labour, the piece aims to provide new perspectives on these spaces and the stories they hold. Ieremia is editing the film in BEK’s video studio and will share the work-in-progress this evening.

We will serve hot food,  and prepare some salads and snacks. Please bring with you whatever you would like to drink.

The event is free and open to all and is a great opportunity to meet and get to know BEK and our community. We wish you a warm welcome to our spaces in C. Sundts gate 55, 9th floor.

Contributing artists

Tze Yeung Ho (NO) is a composer and artistic researcher. Ho’s music is created at the crossroads of understanding, reflecting his multilingual upbringing. His works explore the territories of speech, translation in language, dramaturgy and poetics. Working with Scandinavian, Finno-Ugric and Chinese poetry and prose, his music treads on the fragile landscapes of (mis)communication through (un)spoken words. Close collaboration with living writers, storytellers and word-based artists is integral to his practice. His creations usually result in some form of music theatre.

Rui Liu (CN) explores the historical and functional structure of fine art and its potential and works across various media including bookbinding, weaving and coding.

Over the past years, Eleni Ieremia (GR/SWE) has been working with a range of different mediums and materials that deal with the topic of the balance between labour and rest. Her art has become more influenced by her own experience of juggling several part-time jobs, in parallel with her artistic practice. This has put her on a quest to try to portray and understand the intersection between production, rest, work, and the power systems that underpin them.
