Matti Aikio is a Sámi visual artist from Finnish side of the Sápmi. His DJ-sets include music ranging from disco to house and techno, African rhythms and indigenous sounds from all over the world.

Aikio’s been spinning records in Rovaniemi, Tromsø, Oslo, Berlin, Oulu, Stavanger, Athens and Ulaanbaatar, and has, among others, recorded a DJ set for the public radio project “Every Time A Ear di Soun” as part of the documenta 14 exhibition.

For the symposium, Aikio will also give a talk, “Indigenous Traces”, telling stories and sharing his archive of video, sound and photography.

Matti Aikio

Matti Aikio is a Sámi visual artist from Finnish side of the Sápmi. He has a background in Sámi reindeer herding culture. He holds an MA in contemporary art from Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art. He works with mixed media, photography, sound, installations, video, sculpture and text. Aikio’s art has been exhibited widely in Europe, Asia & Latin America.
