The Blended Reality Lecture Series invites new media practitioners from around the world to share their work and research in Bergen. The artists that are being featured will not be travelling to Bergen, but will use video conferencing and other online tools — in sometimes unexpected ways — to experiment with  the possibilities of remote lectures and interactivity. The Blended Reality Lecture Series is a collaboration between BEK and the Office of Life + Art (OLA).

For our very first lecture on Wednesday, 23rd September, we have invited Elizabeth LaPensée (Ph.D.). She is an award-winning designer, writer, artist, and researcher who creates and studies Indigenous-led media such as games and comics. LaPenséee is Anishinaabe with family from Bay Mills, Métis, and Irish. She is an Assistant Professor of Media & Information and Writing, Rhetoric & American Cultures at Michigan State University and a 2018 Guggenheim Fellow.

In this lecture, LaPensée describes her approach to design, art, and writing as she weaves back and forth between comics and games. Her works connect aspects of stories and teachings through thematic threads, such as in the parallels of the game “Thunderbird Strike” and the comic “They Who Walk As Lightning.” At other times, her game design ties in with comics, which informed aesthetic choices for the 2D point-and-click adventure game “When Rivers Were Trails”. Whether comics or games, each have their unique pathways for Indigenous expression
