MULTI at Borealis

The concert series entails commissions and development of new work, software development and competence building within surround sound, as well as presenting important Norwegian and international works.
For our 2017 edition, Tolga Balci, who has previously been behind the scenes at many Lydgalleriet and MULTI events but now lives in Turkey, will present a work for the first time on the surround system. Jacqueline George was part of the acclaimed Egyptian Females Experimental Music Session at Borealis in 2016, and having taken part in a surround sound workshop at BEK, we now invite her back to present a new piece in the format. Craig Wells, from the UK – but now a Bergen resident – combines live electronics and surround sound in a new work, and Yvette Janine Jackson, from the USA, presents a surround radio opera.

About the artists
Tolga Balci is a artist and musician, born in Ankara, Turkey. He initially studied sculpture and later focused on music and sound. He has MA in Fine Arts from Bergen Academy of Art and Design (KhiB). Tolga plays with the Turkish experimental post-rock trio Karakamu. He currently lives and works in Istanbul, Turkey and Fredrikstad, Norway. For Borealis he will debut the piece Black Empire, Fragile Objects. The piece consists of recordings from special acoustic locations, field recordings from social events, group sessions of musicians and text.
Jacqueline George is a sound artist from Egypt. Her main source of inspiration is brainstorming and mind maps. She uses these to reflect on prevailing concepts such as time, the earth, death and freedom within human relations, reformatting them through different perspectives and different media. She is fascinated by how sound can carry ideas and is always looking for creative potential inside Cairo’s noise. Jacqueline visited Borealis in 2016 with the Egyptian Females Experimental Music Session.
Craig Wells is a British sonic artist and composer based in Bergen, Norway. His practice oscillates between free improvisation, sound collage and electroacoustic composition. He works under various monikers, most notably Klunks and Refrains where he weaves together field recordings, analogue synthesis and rhythmical paroxysms that are all held together with a jazz sensibility. The multi channel composition by Craig will be a dialogue of pre-recorded materials and live experiments in collaboration with Mathias Loose from Denmark.
Yvette Janine Jackson is a composer, sound designer and installation artist born in Los Angeles. Her radio operas frequently focus on historical events and relevant social issues expressed through composition, improvisation, acoustic, concrete and synthesized sounds, fixed media and live performance. Recent projects include Party Line, for San Diego Art Institute’s “The Dead Are Not Quiet: A Group Exhibition of Macabre Art”; Duets in the Key of Dada with David Molina at the San Francisco International Arts Festival; and a residency at Stockholm’s Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) which culminated with the premiere of This is Radio Opera at Audiorama.
