COST IC0601 Action on Sonic Interaction Design
Working Group 3 – Interactive Art and Music

Sonic Interaction Design is the exploitation of sound as one of the principal channels conveying information, meaning, and aesthetic/emotional qualities in interactive contexts. The Action pro–actively contributes to the creation and consolidation of new design theories, tools, and practices in this innovative and interdisciplinary domain. While being advanced through a few sparse projects, this field relies on the COSTSID Action to strengthen the links between scientists, artists, and designers in the European Research Area.

The COSTSID platform stands on four legs:

  1. perception, cognition, and emotion
  2. design
  3. interactive art
  4. information display and exploration.

These are each supported by the research and development of the requisite new interactive technologies. Due to the breadth of its application spectrum, the COSTSID Action has the potential of affecting everyday life through physical and virtual interactive objects, as today there is the possibility to design and actively control their acoustic response so that it conveys an intended aesthetic, informational, or emotional content.

SID stands for Sonic Interaction Design and it is a COSTICT Action. The proposal was approved by COST Committee of Senior Officials (CSO) on November 20th, 2006. It entered into force on March 28th, 2007, and it will end on June 1st, 2011. The SID Action had its kickoff meeting in Brussels on April 24th, 2007.
