Bring the whole family for a playful, exploratory day at BEK – Bergen Center for Electronic Arts at Nordnes. Every year, BEK and Borealis invites children and adults to dive into the world of experimental sound and music, and experience it through play, listening, and creative expression. Don’t miss the fun activities we’ve prepared this year!

Sunday, March 15. 13:00–16:00
BEK, C. Sundts gate 55, floor 9.
Free entry

14.00 – joik workshop session 1
15.00 – joik workshop session 2
Recommended for children aged 4 and up, though younger participants are welcome to join!

Each session lasts about 35 minutes. There is no registration, but once the session has started we cannot admit any additional participants. Please choose the time that suits you best and arrive in advance!

Festival artist Sara Marielle Gaup, the composer behind listening piece for Jiennagoahti, Nana Nannán – Solid Soil, will lead two open workshop sessions for children. She will joik and introduce kids to this traditional Sami singing form through storytelling.

Families can also play with an interactive installation featuring contact microphones and resonant objects, created in collaboration with Daiyen Jone and Knut Olai during the nyMusikk and BEK workshop.
There will be plenty of space to draw, play, and be curious — or simply rest! Come and go as you like, and enjoy coffee and waffles between explorations and playful shenanigans.

Sara Marielle Gaup

Sara Marielle Gaup is a renowned Northern Sámi musician and joiker who blends tradition with contemporary expression, and also works with duodji (traditional Sámi crafts). She is an activist with a clear decolonizing agenda in all her pursuits.

In addition to being an exceptional joiker, Gaup has been a pioneer in exploratory Sámi music through projects such as Adjágas, Arvvas, and OZAS, as well as working as a composer for film and documentary. In 2020, she opened the exhibition Nils-Aslak Valkeapää / Áillohaš at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, featuring new arrangements of Áillohaš’s songs and luohti in collaboration with pianist and composer Andreas Gundersen from Tana. She continues to build on the experiences gained from this work in her exploratory musical projects.

Gaup’s compositional process involves time spent in nature, the development of new melodies/luohti, and the exploration of various traditions for long-form Sámi experimental music rooted in the work of Nils-Aslak Valkeapää / Áillohaš.

Presented in collaboration with Borealis – a festival for experimental music taking place in Bergen 11–15 March. See the detailed festival programme at borealis.no.
