For most people, the turntable is a tool for playing music.

For María Chávez, it is an instrument.

María performs with the specially developed RAKE Double Needle, a pickup with two needles that allows her to read two different parts of the same record simultaneously. The result is an instrument that behaves unpredictably, opening up new ways of listening.

At the festival, María Chávez presents a solo performance on Friday, and on Thursday she leads a workshop for anyone interested in exploring turntablism as an artistic practice.

María Chávez

The Peruvian-American sound artist has spent more than two decades developing abstract turntablism, an art form in which the turntable is not used to play records, but to create new sounds. Scratches, dust, worn grooves, chance and technical errors become part of the composition, with each performance emerging through an encounter between material, space and the moment.

In 2012, Chávez published Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable, a book that has become an important reference for a new generation of turntablists and sound artists. Her work builds on ideas of chance, improvisation and Deep Listening, developed together with her mentor Pauline Oliveros, and moves with equal ease between concert halls, clubs and art institutions such as Documenta, the Getty Museum and the Guggenheim.

The performance and workshop are a collaboration between EKKO and BEK.
