Ananda Serne will present her short video Insect Sing-Along (2022), along with a clip from her ongoing whistling project. Both works explore the mimicking of insect and bird sounds through the human voice.
Together with graphic designer Elena Op ‘t Eynde, Ananda will translate whistling into transcripts on paper. The two first met during a residency at the Château Mercier Foundation in Sierre, Switzerland, in 2017, where they discovered a shared interest in the book as an object and its performative capacity to engage readers. While the whistling project is still in its early stages, Ananda plans to share part of the research during the event.
During her residency at BEK in 2025, Ananda will edit her short 16mm film A Long Hum, which focuses on the monitoring of sleep and dreams. Simultaneously, she will advance her long-term research on whistling. One part of this research, the short video Whistle, was created in collaboration with violinist and experienced whistler Hanna Kallestad, exploring the dissonance between image and sound.
Throughout 2025, Ananda will continue working with graphic designer Elena Op ‘t Eynde to translate whistling into transcripts on paper. Their collaborative exploration also extends to the concept of Aeolian sound. Aeolian tones, also called wind tones, are sounds produced when wind moves through or around natural formations, often resembling whistling or humming.
